Still life with lizard and quince

watercolor on vellum
6"X 7"

This little painting was inspired by renaissance artists who were interested in painting botanical illustrations. I painted on vellum to experiment with how a really smooth surface would work to convey a lot of detail.

Amanda Waiting

Amanda Waiting, Oil on Canvas 24" x 32"

I have always been attracted to the patterns of light that come through a window. When my friend Amanda was sitting there in all those lovely pools of light, I knew I wanted to capture it. I had been reading a book published by the Getty Museum on a pastel painting by Degas called "Waiting". Inspired by the mystery and ambiguity of that image, I let Amanda's pensive expression let the viewer imagine the story.

The walk to Piazza Navonna

There is something really special about seeing a Hummingbird at rest. This fellow sits right outside my window in my kitchen every day. He knew I was interested in him and would actually seem to be posing. I loved how something so small could carry himself with such dignity.
